Virus kb to desktop conversion?
Anyone heard of a virus kb being converted to a desktop before? I don't really play keyboard and for space reasons a desktop would suit me better. Anyone know if I can just remove the circuit boards and mount them onto a new front panel?

It's a damn good keyboard to saw off from the unit. But I think it's totally possible to do that. If I were you, however, I'd sell your current unit and get a new desktop on Ebay. I think the Keyboard sells for more then the desktops, right? So you should be ok.

I wasn't thinking of sawing it apart, I hope it might be possible to just move the internals into a new box, non-distructively. I'd assume access make more or less the same internals for both models. I'd like to keep the option of going back to a keyboard version someday. guess I'll have to open it up and take a look

You could do it exceptionally easily with an Virus Indigo/Polar variant, even re-using the original front panel fascia without damaging or having to cut anything. It's all housed and self-contained behind the fascia.
http://www.infekted.org/virus/showthread.php?t=31443 The only two things you'd need to re-house would be the PSU and the ribbon controller PCB. With a Virus kB, I'd imagine you'd be able to transfer all the internals in a similar fashion, you just wouldn't be able to retain the front panel (like the Indigo/Polar) without involving a nasty hacksaw, or as you say create a new front panel using something else. In this event, unless you want the custom look and welcome the hassle, you might as well sell the kB and buy a Virus B desktop, and pocket the $ difference. |
