is there any way to embed Midi Clock information into either an mp3 or mp4 file?
in my band we play to a backing track from my iphone5 fed into the external input of my TI2 and then out of the TI2 into a Korg KP3+
i don't like the auto bpm of the KP3+ (or the tap tempo for that matter) and would love it if i could somehow stamp the tracks with Midi Clock information. any ideas? i'd like to do this even if i have to eschew the whole mp3/mp4 format altogether and feed the tracks into some other app/program. any help appreciated |
there's no way to add Midi Clock information to an mp3 file.
but there's nothing preventing you to use the "tempo" of a given track to sync all midi instruments to that tune. to start with, you need to find out what the song's tempo is. then you need to set your host software to send midi clock information to the instruments (virus and kp3+) so that when you hit play the backing track plays and the hardware is perfectly in sync with it. if you happen to have some DJ software like Traktor: it's usually quite effective at detecting a song's tempo ('cause it just needs to be) and it's easy enough to set it to send midi word clock from it. what you can do to mp3 files is write an "ID tag" on it, there's an option there to set the bpm. I honestly don't know if there's more to it then simply being able to see it on iTunes or similar apps, or if it overrides tempo detection on dj apps - which is an interesting test to make! |
You can get the traktor dj app for the iPhone that might do what you want. I use the laptop version for DJing & it's usually spot on as regards BPMing anything even Mp3's.

wow, thanks guys.
this seems like just the ticket. i'll keep this thread updated with the progress of this solution. |
got Traktor Dj and loved it so much i went ahead and got a Traktor z1 controller.
great combo. this allowed me to ditch the kp3+ altogether and simply use Traktor's on-board fx which are automatically beat synced. ps: Native Instruments informed me that Traktor DJ does NOT send MIDI clock information. too bad. not sure whether Traktor Pro 2 does or not. anyone know? |

if it's not absolutely necessary that the TI is synced I would keep the set up you have because the route I just described can be a total ball ache, time consuming & of course more expense. Just my 2c. |

o cool, thanks Tweakhead.
dang, now i'm conflicted about whether to get a Mac or an iPad. i've just barely enough $ for an iPad 128gb. Traktor doesn't run on iOS devices so it would only work in my live setup with a Mac. also, the x1 controller would really help me out a lot, but again....doesn't work with an iPad. (been using Traktor DJ on my iPhone) hmmm |
