Im thinking of getting myself a midi book. Any recommendations? Are most of them written with Cubase in mind?

How do you guys write midi sequences? Note editors? Playing it in? Also....if your playing is a bit sloppy...or its complicated....do you have to use a high quantisize value (i.e. 1/12? Also, lets say youve made a short midi bass sequence....how do you loop it? Such noobi questions I know....but these are my main concerns just at the minute.
