Afghanistan also provides a very good strategic toe hold in the middle East.
Its not really so stupid when looked at in terms of gaining financial and military advantages in this apparently ongoing conquest. Iraq like Afghanistan is only another step along the way.
Careful not to dimiss anything without first doing some proper research.
