PCI and Firewire will give you similar audio latencies. (For example, I'm getting 3ms on my motu traveler (firewire 400).

However PCI will let you use lower MIDI latencies (~1ms, as opposed to ~4 or ~5ms for firewire).

USB v2 audio was slower on the uptake but I reckon we'll start to see more of these cards as coding techniques and hardware implementations for it are becoming more refined.

There was an excellent article about the different types of soundcard implementations (USB vs. PCI vs. Firewire) via interview faceoffs between the largest soundcard companies (RME, Motu, M-Audio, Echo, etc.) in last months Sound-On-Sound.

I reckon they're a bit coy about what they said regards PCI-Express, personally, though. I think PCI-E will be *big*, when it comes around.
