I suspect that's because you use the Virus USB connection also for audio, there's a few msec. of latency on it just like on any USB or firewire soundcard.
Use the analog outputs on the Virus to get your attack back!
Everything seems to sound a bit fuller (or maybe just louder?) when it passes through the Virus D/A converters.
Use the USB connection for midi only.
