I suggest you try Cubase's Safe Start mode:
"Start Cubase/Nuendo and hold down <Control> + <Shift> + <Alt> (Windows) or <Cmd> + <Shift> + <Alt> (Mac OS X) as soon as the start screen appears."
This way you can check if the problem arises from your definitions or not. If it works properly like this, you should trash your definitions and build them from the ground up again.
I agree with MBTC in that the crashes have nothing to do with the cables. I'd guess that your problem is some bad configuration of either Cubase or the audio interface or both.
