Another Virus On The Way!
Hello forum,
Thought I'd introduce myself. My name, as you may have guessed, is Phil. I just ordered a Virus C, which should arrive next week. Early next week, I hope.
I'm a middle-aged lawyer from California who has played drums since 1970. That definitely makes me middle-aged. From my college music days, I have some background in classical and jazz theory, keyboards, and I've dabbled in mallet percussion. I'm in the process putting together a home studio. I don't have a dedicated computer yet -- it's all hardware so far. (I'll eventually do computer based recording and/or synthesis but have enough on my hands for the moment.) So far its:
- Akai MPC2000xl sequencer/sampler
- Akai Z8 sampler/midi-module
- Virus C
- Waldorf Micro Q Rack
- Simmons SDSV and SDS7 electronic drums
- Acoustic drum kit
I found a lot of the gear used (and cheap!) on ebay (the Virus is new, however). I have MUCH to learn. MUCH.
My taste in music leans towards Miles Davis, King Crimson, and the bizarre generally. My intent is to create sequences and soundscapes to which I can play/record live drums (acoustic and electric). I don't know exactly what the music is going to sound like, but I'm sure it will follow my general taste for the bizarre.
See you in the forum.
Phil T.

Hi Phil,
Always great to have someone on the board who is into some other genres of music as oposed to straight dance.
Looking forward to hearing some of your music.

Yay! Just when I was worried about getting too much trance people on the forum. Great! Maybe you could make a Virus interpretation of 21st Century Schizoid Man for starters. ?hih.

Sounds like experimental ambient. I'm looking forward to hearing your tracks.

Thanks for the welcome! It'll take me some time to get tracks up and running, particularly with acoustic drums, but over time it will happen. The acoustic kit is by Drum Workshop, not Tama, I'm afraid. I want to run the Simmons drums thru the Virus and see what happens.
Can't wait to get started -- I don't think it'll be Schizoid Man, though. I was thinking of doing a sequenced version of a Mahavishnu Orchestra tune, maybe "Meeting of the Spirits," to get warmed up. I have a score to that one.
