What does everyone use to record?

I'm thinking of getting an RME Fireface 800, but I'm curious to hear and see what everyone else uses.

I use a MOTU 2408mk3 (8 analogue I/O, 24 TDIF, 24 ADAT, 2 S/PDIF). I highly recommend it. It has lots of options, and you can add up to 4 more interfaces to the PCI card....for instance another 24 channels of analogue I/O for quite a reasonable price....Like US$800 or so....

And they are high quality 24/96k converters. Very nice.

Why dont you get something like the Mbox? Then you get tools as well, and some cool plugs and a cut-down version of Reason, and a couple of nice mic pre's. For a very reasonable price.

I think that most soundcard-I/O Boxes in the "project studio" price range are much of a muchness.....by which I mean that they all offer similar specs and functionality, and it all comes down to brand preference. Im pretty sure that they all have very similar sound.

It's only when you start getting into the high-end converters like the Apogee stuff, or the Prism Sound ADA's that you will start noticing a difference in digital conversion quality, and even then it will be quite marginal. You have to pay alot more, for only a little bit more sound quality....alot for a little.

Hmmm....far from average actually. For the price they just cant be beaten

Very cheap (come down in price recently) but very good performance. You will need a dead silent pc though....as the converters are housed on the card itself.

In my opinion, the best solution for sensible money is the M-Audio Delta 1010. Superb sound quality and features. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_g...1010-main.html

I don't want to be locked into Protools.

The MOTU gear was what I was considering, in addition. But the more tastier gear (with ADAT support) soaks up a PCI slot, one which I really do not want to give up in my system.

Yep, I seriously can't notice much difference at all with high end cards (expcet for the price). If I was recording bands for money or remixing other peoples work I would think about upgrading.

Saba, you seem to really go for the high-end gear. Do you have any tracks online or anything we can listen to?

Don't get anything PCI based, my rackmount Motu896 firewire card is fantastic because the d/a converters are top notch and they are nowhere near the noise of the pc. Its the only way to go if you aren't a millionaire but are after professional results.

Even with the 2408mkIII with the PCI, the converters are in the breakout box and therefor PC noise will not affect it.
