Default Does this exist?

Hello, I have this here PC I never use because it's so goddamn a pain in the ass to use as a DAW under Windows. Is there a OS specifically made to turn a PC into a DAW? I fucking HATE Windows! But I'd like to use my machine. Thanks

No, no...you misunderstood. I'm asking if there is an OS, like windows, or Linux that is it's own platform specfically made for being a DAW. I'd like to turn my PC into a giant harddisc recorder. This is what I'm curious to know if it exists.

There is always the possibility to use something like XP-lite to create a minimal windoze, then install what you need and leave it at that. That's pretty much what I have done and it works well.

I am hoping that the main sequencer programs make Ubuntu compatible products soon though - been looking at the latest Ubuntu release recently and it's pretty damn good. Fair few people at the uni I work at (non-PC related) are making the switch and of course most of the people who are in PC related fields use it already.

Can you elaborate on XP-lite? Is that a minimal XP install?

And also on Ubuntu.

If only I could install Mac OS on a PC, and that'll never happen.

Ubuntu is a version of linux. And seriously, if you are doing music, you can basically forget linux. there is only one piece of daw software and it doesn't use VSTs. Linux is miles away from being used for music production and none of the big names (cubase, logic, pro-tools) are going to be ported to it in the foreseeable future.

Again, using a cut down version of xp will mean you are still working on daw software in xp.

What you are after is a DAW OS which does not exist but is an interesting concept.

You're best bet is reinstalling xp and putting nothing on it apart from your DAW software. The more stuff you install on a machine the more problems you are likely to encounter.

Yep, and when using something like XP-lite (you can google that for more info) it creates a very minimal machine. Closest your gunna get a dedicated DAW I guess.

Let's just hope the software companies create Ubuntu ready software in the future....
