How many of you guys have done gigs?

What setup you usually use on a gig? Do you do DJ stuff, play completely live or something from the between? (If you haven't done gigs before tell how you would) Let's see how many different ways to go gigging there is.

Also feel free to share your gig experiences (good and bad ones).

i made an attempt to play along side a DJ once....but when practicing for the set, the twat was trying to give me orders on what sounds he thought would fit!! he thought it was as easy as dialing a preset (bass hoover) or something!

over here ive made a few CDs for a couple of DJs...just dub plates and remix sections for the tracks they play.....im not gunna play live along side a DJ again unless they are turntablists and they want to scratch and mix along side my music..not the other wqay around.

in ausi there was a great club that would open once a month, just with live electronica and hybrid groups...me and another guy (who was playing in a rock band at the time) were starting to get things ready, but then i got offered a job over here, so that fell thru!

to setup was a bit of a bitch.....

we linked up to cubase with a few simple midi lines for the drums....he had his sampler set up so all the drums were in the same tempo, plus the snares, bass kicks, high precussion and effected stabs were all on the same triggering notes...that way he could change and layer his sample sets live as the track/set was going, so the drums would change without a hiccup...then all the rest we would play live or trigger synced loops from other samplers and the like......sooo much fun!! but unfortunately we never got to try it out in a live situation...just jamming!

I?ve done a couple of gigs. First time I performed in our shcools party about two years ago. I played mostly melodic trance. I had Rm1x as a controller for Emu Orbit, Waldorf Pulse and Korg Em-1. It worked just fine with that simple setup (the crowd wasn?t so critical ).
After that I had a gig in a local club. The setup was almost the same but now I had Virus KC to control too. I played Techno and Progressive trance. Got some good comments from people (I was pretty stressed out because I playd the first time for people who knew something about electronical music).
Now I?m starting my own club and I?m going to play at the opening party. The same setup again with Rack Classic. It?s going to be hard energetic trance the whole night. I?m playing before the last DJ (Proteus) who is well known here in Finland and has played in the UK a few times.
I have a great live set now and I trust my old Yamaha very much. It has worked before and is going to work just fine now aswell. It?s a killer live sequencer. Nothing else to say.

I will someday when I get to a computer which I can freely use. I don?t have my own one right now. I?m posting here from my school at the time. I can?t make mp3?s out of my songs right now.

Nope. In Tampere. I?m still working on it. We haven?t desided the opening party date yet. It should be near next April I think. I still have so much to do.

Maybe I'll answer also on this:

Hmm... I haven't had any gigs (few planned but each of them got canceled at the last moment), but I think I would play with computer as a sequencer/sampler and play as many parts live as possible + some live tweaking.

With a band it would be easier. If overdubs are really needed then with a sequencer from where a click to drummer, but that's always hazardous because if drummer starts too early or late the band is in trouble with the overdubs.

And of course I'd wear a suit on a gig. Nothing beats official look. And with a band I'd get an old EKO organ as a instrument for rough handling. That might sound quite good when fed through heavy effects.

Well, my band's live setup depends a lot on the venue and ammenities of the house. (And it's industrial/alt rock/near metal stuff, so it might not be comparable). But...I'm always, no matter what, running my synths into my 828mkII. Most of the time I use it as a stand-alone digital mixer to get the synth stuff mixed down before it hits the house mixer. DAT is synced to 828mkII, and I send a click to the drummer. If the house has a video screen (and we have plenty of time to set up); we'll bring a computer with us. This allows us to use something like cubase or digital performer to play the DAT backing tracks, send the click, maybe run a soft-synth, and play the video. Just be sure your system is stable...my old one wasn't very stable and we would occasionally have all the computer duties drop mid-way through a song. That's no good. My new setup is G5 Mac w/DP4, runs solid as a rock, but I don't know if I wanna bring the whole computer to shows, you know?
