well when you modulate something you are changing its value over time.
so if you modulate the pitch of an oscillator you can change its pitch over a given time interval.
the mod matrix is where you can modulate everything on the virus control surface and everything in the sub menus.
this is where the real meat of the virus is and until you get to grips with the mod matrix its not really possible to truly appreciate how complex this synth is.
one interesting part of the virus is recursive modulation which can be done in the mod matrix. modulating a parameter that is already being modulated. you can also modulate a parameter and then assign another parameter on the virus to change based upon the change that occurs when the first parameter is being modulated.
this all sounds a bit confusing but the bottomline is that you can create an unbelievable amount of movement in the sound, from subtle pitch wavering in order to replicate analog sounds to huge massive pads which have so many things changing over time that its just a swirl of movement.
