these guys have lots of toys like vocoders, theremins, modulars, pre amps and its all analogue and all a quarter of the price you would expect to pay all you need is some spare time/cash, patience, and a little soldering skills.
i wont be buying the case on offer at the site i have bought an old sinclair spectrum from 1984 so it will be analogue and vintage with midi..
lots of sites showing mod plans how to hard syn osc,s and i am thinking of splicing in a photo theremin i built as an extra ocsillator or optical lfo.

i,m gonna have this baby blingin :P

I only wish I had the skill and patience to do something like this.

303 is the guy to talk to about this sort of thing here. Pretty sure he has built a few "do it yourself" synths.

You'll have to give us a step by step photo journal of how it goes when you start it Gimpoid.

lol i remember 303 built one of thos modulars and he did few mistakes which led to an unstable modular synth,that might be cool for expirimental music

I've acctually built that PAiA 9700-system. It worked fine for about 2-3 weeks and after when i was about to make some more samples of it it went postal and went up in a mushroomcloud.

Well not that dramatic.. But after i spent endless hours trying to see what parts that had been damaged i gave it to a friend of mine that tried to fix it but he said that what went wrong was probably a faulty PSU and nothing else but with that faulty PSU it turned into a melted piece of modern art-metall.

I got it back and i first had plans to acctually try to salvage as much parts as possible from it but i did regret it and threw it away instead. May it rest in pieces.

EDIT: Fatman is a really easy synthesizer to build. atleast that is what i've heard (had friends with no experience in soldering/electronics) building a fatman. The pretty boring thing is that it's a really dull synthesizer without any mods.

i have no previous electronics experience or soldering and
this is my second project, my first was a photo theremin i got from roth-film ebay for 20usd.it comprised of only a few components and was pretty easy took less than an hour.
any one can have a go with out spending too much if your are unsure you are going to pursue it.

sorry to hear of you misfortune did you take the us power supply that you get with the kit or did you change to a different rating ie.240v

some of the mods look quite complicated and that they would require extra pcb,s do you use bread board or something?

I bought the kit from a friend but he didn't find the original PSU that he bought with the modular so I was dumb enough to acctually use a multivoltage PSU (you could set it at 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 12 volts) but it was a cheap copy and for some reason it didn't really convert anything (that's what i think anyway) so that's why it got fried.

Sorry for the really fuzzy description of the whole burn-part but i can't even explain it in Swedish what really happened to it. I dont blame PAiA nor my solderingskills.. I just had bad luck i guess with it but i got it really really really really cheap so.

I really can't answer that question mate. Oh.. I've heard that the "LFO"-mod is quite easy..

That's some of the mods.. I know there is even more. People added more VCO/made the VCF better and so on.

good idea hc i think i will do that but if you cant wait heres someone who has already done it. i read it a while back to get an idea if how hard it would be to make one of these things :P

i thought i would start with the fat man and work my way up to the modular kit when i get enough money ,was it hard to build?
the fatman estimated build time is 40 hours how loong do you think it would take for a modular system?
