how recordings are factured....
hi
going to record a hip hop artist in a relative's studio, this is the first time we record electronic zik, we're used to acoustic and live stuff....
my question is about how should it be factured? we dont know if the guy has programmed his beat and sounds and is coming with his synths to record only, or is he (or we) going to do all that in the studio...
so how is it factured in general? should programming be factured seperatly (in case of) or is it all inclusive? i mean generally, in most studios.....
thx!!

Not really sure what you mean Hatembr.
Do you mean, will he bring his own music, or will you have to make it?
Or should you record his already made music broken into the seperate tracks, or record it all together as one in the studio?

Depends really......
If he has already got the music, and is happy with the beats etc, then ask him to bring along a rough mix, and he can sing to that.
It is basically like most music, but structured mainly on the beat/loop, and then maybe a sample or hook.....also big bass lines usually, but with most music, there are no rules....
If he has no music, then you should start by laying down a groove, or loop, to get a feel for the song, and then add some other instruments, live acoustic stuff or synth based......whatever. I guess you should maybe meet up with this guy for a "Pre-production" session, where you can establish exactly what is needed from him/you and what is required for the session.
There are alot of variables unless you know exactly what he is hoping to achieve from the session, and what his expectations are.
Good luck mate, and let us know how it goes......hope the info I wrote is usefull.

Definitely agree with this. You really need to find out what he has and what he expects.
If he doesn't have his own music and is expecting you to make it, he will probably have very high expectations of what the finished result will sound like - difficult situation.
If he does have his own music, this will be better for you. I'd probably record his music on seperate tracks part by part if possible and mix and master from there (after recording his vocal of course).
Are you being paid Hatembr?
Anyway, good luck mate!

yeah i'll be paid HC but not a big sum tho! a very symbolic one.
actually it is my uncle's studio and i just help him a little voluntarily, i never asked for money because it is not really a very big business. He started as a home studio and remained so for 10 years. It is just now that he started recording for artists and bands and some companies (voice-off recordings for e-learning and interactive cds). May be when it becomes a real big business i'll ask for more $$$
