Default E-Mu 0404 or something else?

Hey all,

I bought an E-Mu 0404 soundcard for my PC so that I could hook up my mixer to it and stop using my Tascam US-428.

I have not installed it yet.

Upon reading the marketing info it seems like a good buy at $100 U.S. considering it has some limited on-board effects and good I/O.

Before I go ahead and rig this mother up, should I be considering anything else in the $100-$200 price range?

I am using Cubase SX2, Virus KC, guitars, etc.

Any help is appreciated.

Hey 3o3,

I have heard bad things about the Proteus X software but not the card (yet) but am really curious...

I have heard that Emulator X users have had some real pain in the ass problems and are hoping for relief via an OS update.

Let's see what info trickles in...

I was also looking at the M-Audio 2496 but it seems like it has a lot less features than the Emu 0404.

Ciao!

Yeah, We have probably heard the same stories then.

But i've seen that EMU atleast has upgraded Proteus X (even if they are based upon the same plattform).

Damn, i want one of those cards - i'll just gotta hang tight and see what happends, since i don't wanna buy anything that doesn't work right.

I am wondering if it is worth it to upgrade to the Emulator X package because then you have sampling capabilities.

Do you know if you can use the Proteus Sound Banks (ala Mo Phatt) with the Emulator X card?

I would think you could since the Emulator X card is more costly...

But what the hell do I know??? 8O

I had the emu1212 and emulator x package for about 6 months. Sold it recently and got an RME 9632 cos I had enough of it. It probably has the worst drivers Ive ever had with a soundcard. Low asio latencies give awful fluctuations in host sequencer. Emu support ask you to disable inputs to improve stability. Random crashes, losing audio when using asio. And all topped off with some ugly as fuck GUIs and awful patch routings in the mixer.

I thought I would give them 6 months to see if they would fix the problems (as its actually a pretty good card) when the big 1.6 driver release was supposed to come out. Well, it came out and introduced even more bugs without fixing any of the others.

Youll find a lot of people with this card praising it, but they are probably using it with no inputs, no dsp cards, no external hardware and only one output to thier speakers. Anything more and it goes to shit (did for me and several other people I know with the card)

I would advise anyone looking at this card to search elsewhere if you have a big setup. RME, Echo and Maudio are very good alternatives.

Thank you Jasedee and Ten for sharing your thoughts and experiences about this card.

I am definitley returning it and getting an M-Audio or an Echo.

Stay AWAY from EMU!

I bought the EMU1820M a few months ago and it's the worst soundcard I've ever played with. HORRIBLE DRIVERS!

AVOID AT ALL COST

Oh thanks for the info Alex, Ten and Madstation.

It sure sounds like i am gonna stay away from that soundcard then - damn shame since i really could see myself getting that Proteus X-card.
