Default Virus Indigo VS Roland SH2

Okay here is the deal...... I'm selling a mint condition Sequential Pro One on ebay and I was thinking about going for a Indigo 1... but my friend who does programming for electronic mind control swears by his sh2 and says it's amazing except... it's not midi. I do have the midi converter but I just wanna know what you guys think about the SH2. I do have GOBS of effx and plug-ins that i could run a SH2 through instead of having the effx in the virus but.. just gimme your .02, thanks so much guys!

I would absolutely love an SH2. Powerfull twin osc mono. Would I get one instead of an Indigo though? No I probably wouldn't - specially if they were the same price. Which brings me to the questions; How much is the SH, and how much is the Indigo?

Well sh2's go for about 500-600. The indigo's i see for about 1000. Could almost get a SH2 and a Microwave XT for the price of the indigo. Then use plug-ins and some pedals for effx. Just a thought.. anyone else help me?

The stuff we make is a mix of Industrial/Metal/Trip-Hop/Classical. I like real thick throaty leads but i also like high res stuff.. I also have a Juno 60 and a sherman filterbank 2. So for pads I like running the juno through the fb2 for real crazy shit. I just want something easy to program with but really effective. The thing with the indigo would be to utilize the tempo synch appreg and all that tempo syncd schtuff.

A friend also mentioned I might get a TC Powercore with the V!rus plug-in and put the extra towards something else..... Also have Circuit bent casio that I did and I'm starting on a SID synth. So I just need a synth that i basicly dont have or is unique for no more than 1000 used or new, hehe. help me pleaaaaase, thanks

~Welcome To Planet Virus~

I think you'll fit right in here! And for my opinion?

You have too much gear already and should give it all to me, and pursue a life as a monk

Just jokes.......good luck in your search for that something special!

I find sometimes too many options in sound can delay the writing process b/c you are always searching for that sound on different machines. Keep about 2 or 3 synths (DIFFERENT TYPES OF SYNTHESIS), learn em all inside and out and then program the sounds you want. Get something like the G2 that can do all kinds of synthesis. JMO though

Hi man and welcome to the forum! Okdokey...heres my opinion on the matter...

Sounds like your going through a phase we all do. You own some good synths...use them for some time....fancy a change.....money is a bit tight....what do you do? You sell some existing gear! The Roland SH2 is a great analog monosynth.....but to go from a Pro-One > SH2 is not a great idea in my mind. The Pro-One is one of the best sounding and most flexibble hardwired analog mono's ever....the SH2 is very basic in comparison. You like the vintage roland sound (who doesnt!)...but youve got a Juno 60 and that can put out decent bass if you program/process it right.

I appreciate the build quality of the Pro-One sometimes creates mind loops in people (it did with me sometimes)....but the reality is....if you go from a P1 to a SH2 you are effectively downgrading.....and for what? Just so you can get a bit of vintage roland bass/leads? You say you cover industrial music....sequential gear is perfect for that.....roland gear less so in my opinion. The perfect combo for industrial would be a Pro-One/Prophet 5 and a wavetable synth. You want to do synth pop....by all means go get a Jupiter 8/Juno 60/SH2 combo.

I love Roland gear and Sequential......why dont you just wait 6 months and save up the money to buy a 2nd hand SH2 without having to sell the P1. If you could do that it would be a killer combination.

Coming to the Indigo 1......why oh why would you want a 37 key VA? The Indigo is no analog monosynth......you should really think about getting the 61 key version if you really want to play it. The Virus represents polyfiller in my opinion......you know....the stuff that fills the cracks in the walls. For me, tools like Prophets and Jupiters are the structure and the Virus fills in everything else. If you are specifically needing a synth to cover proper bass/leads and fx....then why are you considering soft/VA? I hate to say it.....but analog is superior in this department. Dont get me wrong...the Virus is the best pollyfiller out there....

You just have to ask yourself: What is your real motivation behind all this? Is it to equip yourself with the necessary tools to make the music you want...or is it to quell boredom in your existing gear?

If the Pro-One does sell.....all I can say is good luck man

DS

Sounds like you're armed to the teeth already. If you're after a synth for old 70's style bass I'd go for the SH2 and then use the rest for a powercore card or a decent channel strip module or something. If you need a wider sound palette - pads, atmospheres e.t.c, I'd go for an Indigo.
