Default Virus+Logic Midi Channel Troubles

Hello All,

I'm new to this forum and recently got a Virus TI Desktop. I have a question regarding the use of midi channels with the Virus. As instructed in the manual, when I use multiple sounds with the Virus, I open them on different midi channels in Logic. My problem is that when I assign a bass to midi channel 1, a pad to channel 2 and then put a bass amp (for example) on channel 1, Logic automatically puts that same bass amp on channel 2 as well. I tried automation and bypassing the plug-in on channel 2, but then it bypasses the plug-in on channel 1 as well. This is kind of an issue since it really prevents me from developing sounds the way I want to, any suggestions or answers would be much appreciated!! Thanks!

That's a result of the way that the TI is setup in Logic Pro.

It uses an instrument track and an alias of that instrument for each other midi channel being sent to the virus.

So basically... Logic just gives you the option to make a copy/alias of the instrument channel/track and assign a unique midi channel to each alias.

The difference is evident if you've ever setup VCC with multiple tracks/channels in Ableton Live or Pro Tools. In both of these apps, they use one "Instrument Track" and then create additional "Midi Tracks" and point the I/O to the "Instrument Track"

Ok... now that Ive explained that...

Since you are in logic and the virus uses Instrument track aliases of the original each midi track... that is why if you add an insert to any one of those channel strips, it appears on all of them.

*edit* this is also why the level meters all register the same signal level regardless of what midi track/part is playing... which is kind of annoying. imho.

If you want to apply effects to particular parts, you will have to send them out seperate Virus outputs and create auxiliary send/returns for those parts inputs. Then you can add an insert to the aux where the seperate part is routed to.

hope that makes sense....

Yes, you will need to use the virus multi output (3 x Stereo) in your instrument track in order to apply fx to individual channels. As stated above, you need to create an AUX channel in order to hear the individual sounds. Just click the little '+' on the Virus instrument track in Logics mixer and they will be created for you(best to name them then to keep track of things too). Then, in the VC, right click on the 'D' button and you can select your usb outputs from there. Make sure you have 3 outs selected in the config page of the VC. One thing in Logic that affects the way your different virus midi tracks behave in the arrange is the option 'Track Mute/Solo'. You can find this in preferences, audio, general. Set it to CPU-Saving(slow response)(if it's not already of course!) and this will enable you to mute and solo your different parts individually, as oppose to all at once which can be very annoying!

Cheers.
