Default Do i need midi/audio over lan

Hi

I'm using Cubase 5 as main DAW. I want to use a 2nd pc for hosting VSTs intruments and effects to reduce the pay load on the daw, but be able to easily save my projects and not run a 2nd sequencer on the 2nd PC. Both PCs have XP.

I dont want to spend much (if anything) on this. Any recommendations of free applications that will do this seemlessly.

Bascially :
PC 1 running Daw Cubase 5
PC 2 running VSTs in an appropriate host.
Stream Audio to PC2 from PC1 and return to PC 1 recording in Cubase
Send MIDI from PC1 Cubase 5 to 2nd PC.

Im after the best solution with minimal latency.

To help advice here is what Im using

PC 1 Cubase 5 Audio Interface Mackie 1620 firewire using Emagic unitor 8 Midi interface.

PC 2 Savi Host (Or anything else people can recommend) with Echo Gina 24

Other kit Synths with Access Virus (I understand the virus has midi and can be used as a sound card and I tend to use the USB inputs direct into Cubase 5 on PC1 rather than 1/4'' Jack stereo outs. If I use the Virus on P2 I am guessing when saving projects Cubase 5 wont save the settings etc from PC2.

Im open to suggestions and hope Ive made this clear. I am wondering if its theres a better way to configure the existing set up buit my heads spinning at the moment.

If the virus is on PC2 will Virus Control work in a host and will the settings be saved in projects on the dam?

Any more information needed please ask.

Many thanks

PC2 Setup PC >< Unitor 8 >< Synths >Routed via Mackie firewire >into Cubase 5----

Hello,

We have had similar discussions about this sort of solution in this thread.

You could either build a 32bit DAW to host VC in, then control it over LAN/MIDI, or you could just have the one 64bit DAW and host a virtual machine inside that computer - the virtual box being 32bit. Either method would work, I think. The former would give you more power, but would be more expensive and take up more physical space. The latter is cheaper but potentially liable to bugs as its a fairly experimental setup...

Hi

Yep you're ccorrect we have touched on this before.

I am interested in what you mentioned re 32bit in 64bit enviroment, would that also allow installation of 32bit drivers in 64bit such as legacy hardware or even the virus?

In general i talk reflectively in forums ie brainstorming and trying to untangle the spagetti soup of ideas/options in my head!

Thanks for not flaming

I am wondering and have yet to try (little lazy) if I actually need to use midi/audio overlan and trying to come up with the best solution for production/saving projects/compatibility/least headaches and so on.

Cheers again

Something I am in a quandry on is want one of the systems to run 64bit for memory which would be the DAW(PC1), the issue is neither the Unitor 8 or the virus has 64 bit drivers both of which would have to serve as a midi interface.
What I was thinking was using both ie PC2 32bit Virus TI and PC1 64bit (DAW)Virus midi feeding the MIDI from PC2 unitor 8 to the PC1 virus midi interface and using that route to control the kit GUESSING it should work.
The other question would be latency issues if the Virus was used on PC2 using the USB inputs as VST and midioverlan.
Reason why I am looking at this is preparing for windows7 and purchasing the 64bit version after the release whenever that will be, hence the questions.
