its gonna be my first hardware synth and im a complete noob when it comes to hardware! Will i be able to hook it up directly to the phone in's of my audiophile 24/97 soundcard?

You will need to buy some 1/4" Jack to RCA connectors. Hook up the MIDI I/O aswell, and you'll be good to go.

also will it be easy to set up as a master keyboard for controling my vsti's in sx 2? im used to using a usb midi controler so im hoping this will not be too hard to set up.

It's not impossible, but just spend some time reading the manual, asking questions, and you should be right. There are numerous settings on the Virus for optimizing its use with a sequencer. You might want to upgrade your soundcard at some point, aswel as a new MIDI interface, as I predict problems there. M-Audio is not known for rock solid MIDI performance....
