That might be true for digital synths....ie a digital poly could theoretically have just as good bass and lead response......

.....but not for analogs its a different story. A true analog poly will not have the same response and perceptual snappyness of a dedicated analog mono. Not even a Prophet 5 (reverred for its snappy envelopes). Dont get me wrong....analog poly's can put out great bass (Michael Jackson 'Thriller' Jupiter 8........Eurythmics 'Sweet Dreams are made of these' Oberheim OBX-a).....but they tend to play a more roundy/bouncy style as opposed to a hard, ballsy smack.

You've definitely spent too much time with your Jen 1000. With all due respect....its got to be one of the worst sounding mono's of all time. Ultimately your views on analog mono's is biased if your comparing everything to your jen experience

haha, the jen is a sentimental item, no, I've had them all in my time, from the CS-1 up to the Moogs, and I hear what you say, but from my own experience your dead wrong.
Some of the mono synths of legend can produce the goods, many cannot, some of the most venerable were bloody awful (prophet 1 springs to mind).
My old CS-80 could blow away any moog, no problem, I'd be happy to sit anybody down with the two of them and defy the proof.

The problem is, most opinions of vintage synths are subjective at best (yours and mine included), so its horses for courses.

But when a company in this day-and-age starts selling an inferior product based on the goodwill created by their products of old, and dares to sell it for $1400, we must ask a simple question.

If the great and the good say something is the best, do you accept it at face value or have the balls to say, actually you're dead wrong ?

In 1985 I bought a DX-1, this was after meeting Dave Chowning himself at a Yamaha meet-and-greet.
the great and the good said Yamaha FM synthesis was the best.
I sold it 3 weeks later.
I picked up an OBX-a for some small change and had a lot more fun.

Its good to have another member on this board who's owned/used analog synths.....

Im not exactly clear where our difference of opinion lies. Personally I still think that a true analog synth should command a higher price than a software based product - with Moog gear you never get real value for money....but you do get better re-sale value in the long run

I actually really like the Pro1...but not everyone likes CEM....bit dry and sometimes sterile...but its gritty and more biting than almost anything else. Does the Jen use CEM...i think it does. Do you like Mono-Poly's? I love the smooth warmth of SSM chips....perfect contrast to the Pro1

CS80 for certain types of sounds probably would blow away most other synths....the DX1...I must admit I do love them - im currently using a DX7MKII FD for my FM pleasure

Going against popular opinon - I really don't think much of the Mono-polys. I spent about an hour with one last week, cheap by today's prices, but still not worth what they were asking. They fall into the over hyped, over priced area of Analogues unfortunately.

Although I haven't agreed with many of the things you've written on this board, I do agree with you on this.

The same could be said about pretty much all gear though. Basicly people want machines for what makes them happy in the end.

All up though, I would really like one of these Moogs (for the synced leads, occasional bass and filters), but there is no way I could justify paying that sort of money. I have a similar opinon about the TI come to think of it.
