Normally at the top it used to show you personal messages without having to click any thing. ie, (0) new messages.

Ah, I see - You still get the pop-up notification of a new message.

If you have your browser blocking pop-ups, you may wish to allow them from this site. THere will never be any pop-ups from this site other than site functionality as oppose to adverts etc...
