Default Inspired by Jase's 'War of the Mono BASS!' thread.

As Jase's inspired me, I decided to mix down a little experiment I was working on a few days back now.

The main guts of these sounds are the Yamaha CS10, but I resampled it, layered it with the Nord, inserted a Valve pre, and then ran the final result through the VirusC's filters (One pole and highpass). Also compression was added (in the form of FMR's RNC).

Go to the Soundclick link in my signature and look for Chunky CS10.

Crank the volume!

PS. There are some new dry Virus C demos there as well. (VirusC the Dark Side).

Mate...

I am well impressed! Thats some of the nastiest fucking bass I have heard in a long time.

Makes me think I really need to experiment more with my bass programming.

That shit was just EVIL. I love it....

Edit: What do you mean resampled? You lowered the sample rate??? To get more lo-fi???

Thanks Jase!

Yeah, they are more on the dark side of Bass aren't they.

By "resampled" I mean I first recorded single notes from the Nord and also the CS straight into the sampler (gives a certain quality recording straight into the sampler inputs), then I layered the sounds in the sampler and played the result recording that into the computer. Then I resampled the combined result back into the sampler again so I could use it as a single layer. After doing this a number of times I would mix and match the best results in the sampler.

By recording, sampling, resampling and re-recording it's a good way to get double passes of things like compression, EQ and filters. The end result is playable live (as those you hear there are played live), but it's a real headfuck.

I did drive the desk hard and put a tonne of output gain on the Emu too I should have said, but a heap of the characture comes from the VC filters/saturation stages - without the VC these sounds just would not be possible. And without the filters and the bass on the CS10 I couldn't imagine getting close with any of my other gear.

Thanks for letting us in on some HC trade secrets!

Unfortunately, I dont have an outboard sampler. And I really [hides from all the VSTi crew] dont think I will get the same results using a softsampler [/hides from all the VSTi crew]

But, yeah, seriously dude, those are my dream bass sounds. If I can pull that shit off I can die a happy man.

No problem.

You could get very, very close Jase. Having the SH2 and the CS would kick serious butt! Also that Studer adds great characture.

I rekon you could do it on a software sampler, but the EMU does give a little something when recording straight into the analogue ins. I bet many people would disagree with that though.

im sure this can be done without a sampler, doing all layering and processing using the soundcard as a patchbay and then sending the layerd signal from DAW to studer to virus and back to the DAW.

of course you need to be able to send midi to the CS10.
do you have a CV-MIDI box jase?

You probably could do it without using a sampler, but using a sampler just makes it much easier.

If you set it all up (the way you mention Tommer) for one patch only, it's too much effort for too little gain, but recording many layers into the sampler lets you quickly switch between different combos. Also things like key follow LFOs or pitching envelopes on an Analogue mono running a midi to CV converter aren't exactly possible.

Another reason behind using the sampler is that you get many passes of filters, EQs, compression and Valve gear when building the parts. If you have alot of gear though it would be possible without layering and rerecording, but you would need much more than using a sound card as a patch bay.
