Default Virus TI - VC Problem

Hi,

First post here, unfortunately about problems

Got my Virus TI last thursday, installed it and was happy like never before.. But when I tried it in Cubase SX 3.1 something wasn't right, first of all the screen said "USB connection was lost" once in a while resulting that I had to replug the USB cable. Those moments I could actually get the VC-plugin to start I could only play on it for about a minute as suddenly a huge digital soundloop appeared. So I had to close plugin, replug the USB cable..

This was with my Frost ACM computer (www.frostacm.com) specially optimized for musicproduction.

Well I decided to try it out on my old computer and woah the VC worked as a charm in Cubase SX 3.1!!!

So now is the question, what is the cause for this? I'm not using any external USB hub etc. Perhaps I would need a PCI USB-card?

regards, Kanix Cane

Hi Kanix, welcome to the forum.

A couple of things to try
1. Try a different usb port to see if the problem persists
2. look in your bios for any resource conflicts with the usb port you are using and as a test, disable all the unnecessary components that are sharing resources with your usb port. This is just for testing purposes.
If, after you disable the other resources, the usb port works fine, then you would bring each resource back in, one by one and test to see which is causing your issue.
3. completely uninstall the virus software and driver from your computer, unplug the TI. Reboot. Reconnect the TI and reinstall the software again.

Let me know if you have already tried any of the above and if not, if any of them make a difference.

Cheers, hope I will have a nice stay here

The spec of my Frost is as follows:
Frost ACM-320D - Pentium®D

Aluminium Tower - Anodized black
IntelP Chipset - DualCore support
Intelbit Pentium D 930
(2x 3.0 GHz 4MB Cache)
1.0 Gb PC533 DDR2 RAM
DVD +/- Dual Layer writer
250 Gb 7200 rpm System HD
(16MB Cache 24/7 cert.)
250 Gb 7200 rpm Audio HD
(16MB Cache 24/7 cert.)

2 monitor outputs (1xDVi/1xVGA)
2x Ti Firewire (front/rear)
6x USB 2.0 (2front/4rear)
Gigabit (1000 Mbit) Network
4x available PCI slots
2x available PCIe 1 slots
1x Printer port
1x serial port

Windows XP Pro - Multilanguage, optimized for audio
Keyboard/optical mouse

I have tried to change USB ports without any progress.
Well, changing BIOS is a little bit sensitive in this case as the computer is optimized for audio by the Frost ACM company, and I don't know if I'm able to get support etc if I'm changing in the base settings. Will research more about that!
Also I have tried to reinstall the software several times, the last time I thought it was fixed. Could play maybe 5 minutes with VC. After that the USB connection seemed to fail.

Have you contacted Frost ACM - it sounds like it is a problem they should be looking at.

Perhaps they have over optimised it

Do you have a list of optimisations they have made - I am quite skeptical of companies claiming to optimise your PC or sell you an optimised PC.

Oh and welcome to the forums ,

Yeah, but they doesn't seem to work during weekends
I have encountered them telling the problem, and we'll see what their response will be. Perhaps it's a common problem with their computers, and then they should fix it.
I haven't got any optimisation list, but the company has got good reviews from music/studio magazines so I doubt they are fooling me

you should be able to go into your bios without affecting any warranties.
It's your bios

In there you can at the very least see what resources your usb ports are using and what else is sharing those resource (ie audio card, nic, other usb ports, parallel port etc.)

Beyond overclocking, most of the optimizations they would be doing would be at the os level (and what optimazations to apply really depends on what you would be using the computer for - ie just audio work, audio and internet connectivity etc.)

How do you get into the bios? During start up? F2? Or is it in the OS itself?

It seems fixed! I changed the USB cable to a shorter one that came with my Evolution mk-425c midicontroller which I used earlier.
Weird though, as the original TI cable worked on my old computer..

Thx for all help!

regards, KC
