On any pad, you can use the modulation matrix to create this effect...

Source: Amt: Dest:

LFo (1 or 2) to taste Patch Volume

Set the Lfo to Square Wave and sync it to 8th, 16th.... what evers?

That should work.

Would love it if Access implemented a step-sequencer to modulate volume (or indeed any other modulatable parameter) natively, how cool would that be.

But yes, arpeggiator in "chord" mode can fake it to an extent. LFOs for modulating volume are good, but can be repetitive.

I like to apply key follow to LFO speed... though it likely won't help with the gated pad...

Easiest place to start would be this:

Pick your favourite string/pad patch. Turn both the Amplifier Attack and Release to 0. Turn off reverb & delay (or turn them down).

Turn on the Arpeggiator, and then change the arpeggiator Mode to "Chord".

Play!

Change the Pattern for different variations. Pattern #3 is an (over-used) favourite for the "da-da-daaah, da-da-daaah" type stuff.

Here's a couple more ideas for you:
- In Multi mode, put your pad sound on channel 1 (no arps or gated LFOs, just a pad);
- ideally, you'd use an external sequencer to record something on this channel, so the pad will keep playing while you proceed to the next steps;
- set the pad's output to Out2 L+R;
- connect Virus's Out2 to the input;
- on channel 2, put an input preset (Input mode=dynamic)
- play any rhythmic pattern on channel 2. Or record it in the sequencer, quantize, and free your hands to tweak the filters;
- listen to the trance come out
You can even send several parts to Out2 and gate them all together.

Alternatively, use an Atomizer preset. You lose the filters, but gain, er, the atomizer Note that gating works differently - in dynamic input mode, you press any key to turn the sound ON, while in atomizer, you press a certain key (D# 3 or something) to turn the sound OFF, although this is reversed if you press and hold another key (D#2 iirc).

Have fun!
