How to use vocoder

Basic setup is a mic with mic preamp in external input of Virus.

Let's start building vocoder patch from the last patch of bank C.

The steps:

Effects -> Input select: Here you select the modulator source. (The one where you connected your mic)
Effects -> Vocoder mode: Here you select the carrier source. (The sound you want to talk) If you want a classic robot vocoder then choose "osc" or "osc hold". In osc mode you'll have to press a key(s) to achieve a sound and in osc mode the note you've pressed sustains. I prefer "osc hold".

Now you have the vocoder in use. Set the amp sustain to maximum to avoid sound fading. Now comes the difficult part: Take the manual. Open the page where the vocoder chapter starts and just turn the knobs in the filter section.

Best way to start is to turn every knob in the filter section to middle position and then start experimenting. Just turn a knob to see what is does to the sound and check it from the manual if you want.

To make the sound thicker you can fiddle around with oscillators in a same way as in normal sound programming. Add some detune etc. Also LFO and mod matrix work in a normal way. Of course don't forget the effects (chorus with vocoder is a classic).

Using a vocoder isn't hard if you don't make it hard.

Default vocoder

if i set up the vocoder, like you said, i will only hear my own voice, not changed. it seems like the vocoder doesnt use my voice as a modulator.
maybe its because i need a mic preamp, but i think it wont change much.
is it possible that the vocoder section is "broken" but how is that possible on a software based DSP synth.
another problem is that if i turn Input Direct Thru and Input Boost up to 127 i hear an annoying sound that doesnt go away with pulling out the microphone. i have an old analog mono microphone, but its pretty good.
please post a reply soon.
thanks and bye

You haven't turned the carrier/modulator balance knob (FilterBalance knob).

You need preamp. The input requires 1V peak to peak signal and a normal mic can only generate 10mV signal, which is 100 times lower than the one required. Get a preamp.
