Default Staccato Heaven :: I know the TI can do this....

I desperately need a patch on the Virus TI that emulates Staccato Heaven from the old Roland D-50 synth. With the new Waveforms, I bet it can.

http://www.roland.com/VariOS/VC-1/mp...catoHeaven.mp3

If the link is dead, please email me at EnjoyRC@yahoo.com.

Can somebody please help?

Well as I happen to have the actual beast thats making that sound, Ill see what I can do when I get some time - may be a while tho...

I think alot of people here also have V-Synths and therefore probably also have a VC-1 (D50) card for it.

Edit - thinking about it - Im sure there is a preset in the TI (cant remember which bank) that is quite close to that. There is definately some suitable wave tables as starting points.

I have a very similar sound on my DX7. Actually come to think of it....alot of the DX7 MKII presets (found on my Mega ROM cartridge circa 198 had D50 emulations. Native Dance, Soundtrack and Staccato heaven just being a few of them.....

If I find a mint D50 im tempted to pick one up. Im loving these 80's digital sounds....so much character.....

What about Varios + VC1, or V-Synth+VC1

They run the same original algorythms as the original D50 (I think Roland say its actually the same code even) - ie its not a redone emulation.

Obviously the hardware is different so its alot cleaner, but have used a D50 alot and owning a D5 whey they first came out - I cant say I am aware of any major difference, though I do wonder if it has lost something with the cleaner sound, or maye it just because Im used to much rich synth sounds these days.

Hard to tell I guess without running a VC1 side by side with a D50.

Im know on the V-Synth XT that they have 2 choices of output modes (I'm guessing VariOS and VC1 are the same).
One mode runs the normal V-Synth D/A output stage and the other runs the older D-50 D/As. So although the newer D/A conversion is better you can emulate the older ones perfectly for characture.

I've read a review from SOS that says they put a real D-50 and the XT-50 on an Ocsilloscope and they were exactly the same when the V-Synth ran in the older D/A mode.

I'm not sure how close you'd get to that sound on a TI though. The D-50 has it's own characture (as does the TI) and I haven't heard any of the wavetables on the TI sound like the D-50 (or visa-versa).

Funny - when Marc first put those wavetable demos up, several people commented on how D-50ish they sounded

Actually Ben....some of the cleaner wavetable type bells, drones and leads (the ones which arent abviously being filter swept) sound fairly similar to a DX7....which is nice. I would be very interested to see FM eventually implemented onto the Virus. Although Im guessing Yamaha still own the patents over FM?

Later on tonight im going to experiment running my DX through a Pro-One filter. Hmmm.....analog filtered slap bass coming up!

There is FM in the Virus - it's just much simpler. The new wavetable FM modes offer something like the DX way of doing it as well, apparently.

What do you think then Ben?

I spent about 3 hours yesterday and about 3 hours on the weekend with a V-synth XT and I didn't think those TI demos sounded like a D-50 much at all.

Of course if Access wanted to give me a TI to make a side by side comparison, I'd be happy to take on the burden.
