Default First post - general ramblings

Hello Everyone,

I recently got a virus ti to add some new textures. It seem that most people on this forum are into trance/dance etc... I alternate between fusion and progressive rock. Yes, I know, I'm an old fart.

Anyway, I was wondering why the virus seems to attract the trance crowd. I think the virus is deep enough to be used in all kinds of music. At first I thought it was pretty limited but the more I try to make new patches, the more I discover. This is my first virus so I'm learning something new every day.

BTW: I'm having the same clicks and pops everyone else is having with virus control. My current work around is to program using VC and then disconnect the usb and record and play back using midi. I like VC as an interface.

Welcome
I think the Virus attracts the "trance crowd" because it?s a great synth for the kind of sounds used in trance. But on the other hand it is great for sounds used in alot of musical genres. Mayby the right question would be why the Virus doesn?t attract the crowd of alot of musical genres. Maybe you actually answered this question: It is thought of as being a "trance machine"

Hey Nomad,

welcome.....

I?m new here too, and exactly as you, not into trance and so on...more towards rock and progressive.

...and an old fart

As you maybe have seen in other posts, I?m not really sure if i did the right thing buying the TI. At the same time..I like its sounds...it?s pretty easy to tweak some great leads...and the pads...wow...nice and fat.

...hopefully, when Access fixes the new OS we will have a solid synth to f*ck around with...

Welcome!

Not into trance here either. I'm probably the age where people can call me an old fart too.

I think it's not so much that it attracts a trance crowd, but that trance is one of the largest and most popular genres of electronic music. It just seems like the trance crowd likes the Virus more because there's more of them.

The Virus is just as popular in DnB and breaks too, there's just less fans of those genres by comparison.

My own $.02 anyway.

The TI comes with loads of factory patches that evoke non-trance applications. There are simply gorgeous pads (I love the Oberheim recreations), orchestral sounds (there's an orchestral brass patch that is unbelievable), tasty Rhodes flavors (EkoRoad, for example), and way cool vintage synth sounds (is that Moog Modular Karn Evil 9 lead in bank Q awesome, or what?)....

From flutes to sparkling bells, ethereal string pads to plucked harps, I feel as though I could compose a dozen film scores with the TI for films that haven't ever been made.

I agree completly. The pads are my favorite presets and I have been creating several new pad patches as well.

This is my first synth that can do wave table. I've been using hyper saw on one oc1 and wave tabe on oc2. You can generate quite a bit of movement and evolution this way.

BTW: I mean no disrespect at all to trance music or the musicians that love and create it.

I am enjoying the music I find posted on the forum but my exposure is limited at this time. This forum is helping me broden my horizons. I grew up on prog, jazz, and fusion... all styles that use synths. It's great to be exposed to a genre that is new to me.

I make somewhat industrial/EBM music (to give it a name) and also consider the Virus nto be a great synth for this style. Actually, bands like Covenant make extensive use of this synth; one of my favourite bands, Skinny Puppy, used a Virus Indigo in their latest tour,a dn another of my favourite bands, Haujobb, are going to use a Virus in their forthcoming concerts.
