I took a Fireface 800 out for a recording gig on a shitty 1.8Ghz P4 laptop and recorded 8 channels of 96k 24bit for over 4 hours no probs. The pre-amps are the best I've heard. You can turn the gain all the way up and hear creaks and fridge noises all over my house even with cheep sure mics. There is no self noise which I was accustomed to with even Manley solid state designs.

That's just an impression from someone who hasn't tried any of the other stuff your looking at.

The sos people are fucking idiots, they always defend the underdog even if it is shite. Emu is cheap kit with low quality parts. The drivers and mixer software are bloated buggy pieces of shit and they run like arse at low latency. Believe me, I used to own the 1212 and it was a heap of cheap shit. The documentation was bollocks and the support was even worse. My first card (M-audio 2496) slayed it in every possible way it could. They had like 3 driver releases for the 1212 in 2 years and it didnt fix fuck all, actually it made more problems. The fireface had like 20 driver releases in its first year, always updating shit every couple of weeks.

I got rid of the Fireface because I didnt use half of its features and I wanted a pci card instead of a firewire device (added latency with firewire). I also always wanted a Lynx (sound quality is a bit better than RME) and am getting an Aurora16 to go with it in the next couple of months. Lynx also have slightly better drivers than RME at low latency (I have tested this extensively with the guys on the Nuendo forum.)

If your serious about music then spend a few quid on a decent card, its worth it in the long run and will save you hassle than if you go cheap arse.

Easy there, tiger.

They certainly didn't champion the Creative Shitblaster stuff when that was the "underdog". As a result everyone was wary about the Emu stuff when it first came out ("was it a re-badged Creative s/card?" etc.), but it was proved unfounded, and an excellent soundcard for its money.

I would've gone for the 1616M, but my new laptop didn't have an old-skool PCMCIA card slot, so I went for the Motu Traveler which was partly a compromise as it was firewire as opposed to PCI (of the PCMCIA). Couldn't justify the price of the RME as I'm merely an enthusiast.

Of course some users will be running the emu stuff with no problems, but they have a huge userbase of disgruntled users and complaints (not to dis-similar from the virus TI ), a ton more than I have ever seen for other makes of card.

A few people I know who have purchased emu cards because they are cheap have binned them because of so many problems/issues and gone with RME (of course paying a more), and now running happily.

I stick by my opinon that emu are a cheaply made card with poorly written drivers and bloated patch software. If you have the money shell out for Lynx, RME, Motu, Echo, Maudio in that order, you will be over the moon with the performance of the first two.

i'm using the fireface 800 with a firewire 800 cable...is there a difference in latency between using normal firewire cable or firewire 800?

You need an 800mbit firewire connection/chip to take advantage of the added bandwidth of the Fireface, of course. Most mainstream PCs are 400mbit, i think.
