Default Copyright...80s track

I'm in the middle of using a vocal sample from an 80s tracks (He/she/they are one of the biggest artists/acts of the 80s) problem is i would have to pay for copyright for using the sample without even knowing if a record company would even sign it....Do any of you guys know a good House record company that might take on the copyright if the track was good enough?

I'd contact the copyright owner and ask for clearing...

Either way, make sure it gets cleared.

The Verve happened to use an uncleared strings sample (lifted from one of the Rolling Stones' tracks) in their main melody for their hit "Bittersweet Symphony" in the mid 90's. - And you may know how big that hit was, globally. They still didn't earn a penny from it. - The 'Stones got 100% royalties.

Anyway, wouldn't've thought it was improbable or impossible to do. - That cheesy "Call On Me" tune with the crappy sidechained compression that came out a year ago (I can't be arsed to search for the artist) used a classic clip from some other 80's tune.

Good luck!

It's hard to know in't it. Not sure how all that sort of thing works, to be honest.

There is a Music Business part of the SOS forum, which might be a worth a visit to ask what the options are for clearing samples from previous musical hits.

http://www.soundonsound.com/forum/po...=&Board=MUSBIZ

There are some great clued-up folks on there, 'Rob C' being one of them.

As a mere guess, I'd guess you'd get in contact with their record label and talk out the possibilities. Or get your record label to talk to theirs. A contract will need to be drawn up, so music lawyers will be involved.

Here's Rob C's own professional-based music business site.

http://www.bemuso.com/

Might find something of use on there regards royalties and music licensing. Take a peek at the "Music Business FAQ" part of the site.
