68 LFO waveforms and 64 Osc waveforms? really?
 

i was on vintagesynth.com, looking for a synth that caught my eye, and the virus b series did! it had everything, but only one thing was unclear to me... how the hell can a synth have 68 waveforms?!?!?!?! i havent bought it yet, and im planning to for cristmas, but i wanted to know what the meant by that. thanks in advance!! :D

It's called "wavetables". Not only the Virus series has traditional analogue wave emulations, it also has waves with very different kind of harmonic content. There are synths who do wavetables only and others, like the Virus or most Waldorf's synths, who do subtractive VA, wavetables, fm...

the 68 waveforms are static single cycle waveforms which were designed to add other flavors to the virtual analogue oscillators. they were no wavetables. those were introduced with the virus ti and work differently.

Those waveforms are PCMs. Ultra-tiny, single-cycle audio samples. Even the original Virus A had them.

The main sine, saw and square oscillators are not samples, though. They're calculated by DSP in realtime. The triangle may possibly be too.

The wavetables in the TI are an entirely different entity. Wavetabling is morphing/fading through several waveforms in succession. Not entirely sure how they work though as I don't have a TI. Do they modulate between the same stock PCM oscillator waveforms, or do they have a new set of PCMs?

I long to be able to design your own single-cycle PCMs on the Virus. I hope they add it to a new Virus at some point.

Lots of Synth can do much more waveforms... just an example DSI Evolver.
256 waveforms whatever.. you are be able to draw a waveforms and use it.
FM OSC is one of the best thing in my oppinion.
U can do complex sound with it and endless variation avaiable.

Also with the Monomachine MK.II you can upload your own single or double cycle waveforms into the Digipro "machine"
