Default New Apple Intel Powered Notebooks...

A friend of mine just told me that the latest new Apple MacBook Pro's (Dual Intel Chip) have been recently released... and they are not compatible with Logic Audio.

Hmmmm... slight major fuck up me thinks.

i dont see what the processor type has anything to do with software,
if you can run OS X\OS 10 (etc...)you should be able to run mac writen software.

All Apple Pro applications (Final Cut, Aperture, Logic, Soundtrack etc...) will be intel mac compatible (universal binaries) at the end of march. The intel macs use a transparent/invisible Rosetta emulation to run all the old powerpc applications like Photoshop but software companies will have universal binaries (compatible with intel & powerpc) during this year. So the logic will run on intel macs before april. MOTU and RME already have intel mac compatible drivers. Of course there will be delays when all the software plugins will be intel compatible. It's not enough that logic is so it's still a good idea to use a powerpc mac. I won't upgrade my powermac for another 2 years.

http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

a Macbook Pro with 2 core yonah processor will cost $2000 (1.67GHz) and $2500 (1.83GHz). These laptops weight only 2.54kg and have a 15.4" screen.

On one Finnish music site muuisikoiden.net there was a thread on these Powerbooks. We really have to raise a hat for Apple marketing because the new Powerbook is "quadruple in power compared to previous models" and just before the Intel decision Apple stated "the PowerPC processors are superior compared to competitors". So when switching to the inferior processors the new Powerbook equals to four PowerPC models? Does it get the extra boost from the logo on the panel or something. Classic.

If ya can't beat 'em join 'em.

At any rate, it isn't a bad move by Apple.

Well, we all know that the old G4 isn't very powerful compared to intel's new chips so 1 intel pentium-m or yonah core is about twice as fast as 1 G4 at those speeds. The new "macbook pro" (silly name) has 2 cores so it is no surprise that it can be 4 times as fast. So IMO there's nothing strange about it. Strange that it took this long to replace the G4.

However I didn't like the tone of Jobs when he said that forget G5 and now is the time for the intels because they're so fast. That's just not true. All the G5 processors are about as fast with AMD Athlon64 processors at the same clock speed. The new iMac intel may be as fast as the slower G5 powermacs and of course the new iMac with a dualcore yonah can be twice as fast as the previous iMac G5 because the G5 model has only 1 processor.

The G4 is old and slow but G5 is still today's technology. Apple just made a move to intel because the G4's were too sloooow for laptops and they desperately needed a new faster chip and the G5 would have been fast but generates too much heat so that's why G5 powermacs have those huge heatsinks and cooling systems.

So, basically it is possible that the new intels are almost as fast as they say. Of course there are and have been those tempered photoshop tests etc. but I don't care what they say. What matters is how they really perform. In fact all the G5's are also pretty powerful and it doesn't really matter whether these computers are as fast as they say or almost as fast. But yes, they know how to do marketing.

Just to clarfiy a few things that have been mentioned.

Apple state on their website that they "expect" Universal Application Compatibility by the end of March - not that there will be. (Come on lads most of us own Virus TI's - we should know what this statement should mean in relation to fully working software!)

A reliable source told me that Apple are having major problems getting Logic running stable on Rosetta as what it runs under OS X on the current G5 range.

PLUS if you currently already own software such as Final Cut, Soundtrack Pro and Logic you will have to purchase a new Universal Version! Each Universal version of the software is going for $49 on the US Apple site.
