I'll give my methods for drums...
Don't over compress. Sometimes compressing the kick with the bass can sound nice. Layer snares. EQ for good seperation. Also gating here can emphasize the seperation. Never have the kick on the same channel as the snares (or anything else for that matter). Play them live as much as you can, then don't quantize.
