Beyer make some great cans, I havent heard the DT-990's though. Are you wanting open headphones for accurate monitoring, or will you be using these for tracking aswel???
If using them for accurate monitoring, I would recommend the Sennheiser HD-580/600/650's....They can be found for a reasonable price if you look hard enough.
For tracking duties, there is the Beyer DT-250's, and many others (Sennheisers, Fostex etc...)
But yeah, the AKG's suck IMO

for monitoring, Beyer DT-990Pro have a wider frequency response than AKG also they cost pretty much the same from where I`m buying but usually Beyers are much more expensive and this is the only open model unlike DT-250 I think [also K-240S is the only open studio model from AKG, actually half-open unless you count those small models as well]
Sennheiser has a lot of models to much in my opinion and from all of these there`s not a single one that is marked as a studio/monitor, also all I checked in my price range have these Y fixed straith cables which I don`t like at all ..
I tried once K-271S closed model and it sounded great [but the pressure of closed cans was to much for me, great sound isolation though] unlike K-240S which was I don`t know either that flat / neutral and painfull for listening music CDs or as you said cheap stuff
