Intel will not be going in that direction. All the semiconductor pushing is towards multi-core CPU's, since they finally worked out that its the better option.
They are hitting the physical limits of high-speed switching.

Not really. You have to consider that the Powerbooks are still single processor G4's, while the Powermacs are dual processor G5's. The diff between the G4's and G5's is astonishing, so there's really no way to call the laptop equivalent. Also, the Powermacs hold 8GB RAM, which really helps with plugs like Drumkit from Hell Superior, which can use upwards of 4GB at a time.
Bottom line, in terms of available power for music production, the Powermacs are different beasts entirely than the Powerbooks. I have one project with 157 tracks, over a hundred plugins, over two-dozen soft-synth/sampler plugs, video playback, and MIDI control for our live light show. Processor load is about 80% at 24/44.1, 1024 buffer size. You would come nowhere close to this on a powerbook (or G5 iMac, for that matter).
The Powermacs are spendy, but they're rock solid, fast, and fairly pain-free.
