Default planning to get Genelec monitors

yo

my uncle and I are rebuilding his studio (which is quite old ) and we're almost finished with isolation and room acoustics, we'll soon move to setup and installations, but before that, it is mandatory that we get rid of few oldies in the setup and/or complement few others with newer stuff!

the most urgent point is actually monitors! we thought it would be good to have more up-to-date monitors beside the lovely NS10s he used to work with. We were looking at the Genelec 1030AMP and thought they could be good for the DAW corner, and leave the NS10s for live sound taking and mixing.

Any advice folks ?

More important than "which" monitors, is the surroundings in which they are placed.

1) Treat the "hot spots"....first order reflections (eg the first reflections of sound that reflect from any nearby surfaces)

2) Make sure your monitoring position is symmetrical either side of you, and around your monitors

3) ergonomics can sometimes force you to place your monitors in not so great positions. For best results, have them as far away from walls etc

4) Space between your monitors is important. Too wide? Your stereo image is destroyed. Too close...well, just as bad really

Also, a reputable company will allow you to "test" their monitors in YOUR environment to give them a test drive. If you cant do this, take some CD's you know well, and spend some time listening critically to different monitors.....Dont just assume that becuase Genelec is a high-profile company that their monitors will be right for you or your environment

Good luck!!!!!

you're right jasedee, thats very important. As far as the distance between them and the listener go, i think it is ok, there is enough space to place them correctly, in a triangle shape, the only problem we might encounter later is how far from the wall to put them. The room isn't very big and we almost have no choice, the only way to do it is to place them few centimeters only off the wall, so i guess we need to stick some kind of absorbers just behind them.
Anyway, we're not into this step yet, we're still looking for what to buy for the DAW, later if it is necessary to move desktops and tables to have a good monitoring, then it is no problem, a must is must.

if you are looking to spend good money on monitors then def check out the dynaudio range.

they make 5inch and 6inch passive and active monitors (which obviously vary in price considerably)

when i grow up i want a set of BM6A's
