Mixing in DTS 5.1 surround.
I watched a few movies at a mates house the other day. He had a very nice home theatre setup, with very cool sound. I'd like to make a small track (maybe not even musical) to play on his system. I'm sure I could make something that would make the listener feel sick.
Do any of you guys know any freeware to mix in 5.1?
Do any of the newer sequencers do it - Cubase, Logic or Protools? I'm pretty sure Nuendo does it, but I won't be laying the bux out for that. I've been thinking about upgrading to the latest Cubase though.
Do any of you mix (or have tried) mixing in 5.1?

Cubase SX also has the ability to mix in 5.1
I have never tried though, as I dont have 5 full frequency monitors, nor the sub.
You will also have to mix at 48k onto DVD yeah?

Digital performer supports mixing formats include LCRS, Quad, 5.1, 6.1,7.1 and 10.2. I never tried any of these yet.

Do you really have to mix at 48k? The burning to DVD won't be a problem - just have to borrow my wife's company laptop.

Good question. I was hoping that the 5.1 channels would have a visual display per channel (depending which sequencer can do it). That way I can take a normal track and splice it up to pan around the place without having to actually hear the result. Like I said, it probably won't be a song or anything.
If I can see whats happening visually, then hearing it will be a nice surprise.
Well, the upgrade from VST5 is getting closer by the day!
Thanks for the replies fellas.

This is what I hear....Im not too sure exactly why though.....can someone else here fill in the blanks???
I wouldnt even know what format the mixdown would be.....I only ever mix to stereo. And I dont think the visual thing will work out too well....u really need a proper THX approved monitoring environment to mix well in 5.1 surround.
No harm in experiementing though.....give it a burl!

Yeh, no harm in trying.
As long as I can see basicly what's happening visually, then hopefully I can get some sort of effect in surround. It'll be fun anyway.
Thanks guys.
