I had the AKG 240s...they arent that great. They broke twice now, not very sturdy, and quality is not so great. Cheap stuff....

Beyer make some great cans, I havent heard the DT-990's though. Are you wanting open headphones for accurate monitoring, or will you be using these for tracking aswel???

If using them for accurate monitoring, I would recommend the Sennheiser HD-580/600/650's....They can be found for a reasonable price if you look hard enough.

For tracking duties, there is the Beyer DT-250's, and many others (Sennheisers, Fostex etc...)

But yeah, the AKG's suck IMO

for monitoring, Beyer DT-990Pro have a wider frequency response than AKG also they cost pretty much the same from where I`m buying but usually Beyers are much more expensive and this is the only open model unlike DT-250 I think [also K-240S is the only open studio model from AKG, actually half-open unless you count those small models as well]
Sennheiser has a lot of models to much in my opinion and from all of these there`s not a single one that is marked as a studio/monitor, also all I checked in my price range have these Y fixed straith cables which I don`t like at all ..
I tried once K-271S closed model and it sounded great [but the pressure of closed cans was to much for me, great sound isolation though] unlike K-240S which was I don`t know either that flat / neutral and painfull for listening music CDs or as you said cheap stuff

I have the AKG-K240 Studio - their most compelling feature is their amazing comfort - I can wear them for hours.

I cant for the life of me mix with the damn things though - something about the base frequency responsose curve just seems unnatural so I find it really hard to relate to the real world. They are fine for making details decesion etc - for broad EQ, mastering etc, EQ trimming tracks so they fit together - forget it - if Im using them I have to rely upon a real time analyser display as well - even then as soon as I switch to main monitors you can tell what a complete disaster the low EQ is - Grrrr!

Great late night cans for monitoring etc just because of thier light weight and comfort.

I too also need to find something that is equally comfortable but also with a natural bass sounds that I can actually usefully mix with. Am on the lot out for a pair of grot boxes as well...
