Default for the love of god, help!

my intel imac has a POS sound card in it. constantly crackles and makes weird ass noises.. i googled it, and it seems to be a trend going around with the new aluminum imacs.. anyway, to resolve this, ive been using my virus as my sound card. now, all of a sudden i have no audio coming out of my virus, unless thru logic. ive selected the virus as my output in the os.. and when i press play in itunes, the track refuses to play. videos online, youtube shit like that.. are choppy as hell, with no sound. if i swap back to the imacs output, everything works fine. itunes plays fine, the videos on youtube run smooth, with sound. but the sound crackles like crazy, and its annoying as hell. is this a problem with teh virus or the imac?

Default

Some basic steps first, try unplugging and then reconnecting your Virus, try restarting your computer, ensure your sound output device in itunes is set to the Virus, or to the "default" output (and then make sure the Virus is your default). Try unplugging other USB devices, try the Virus in a different USB slot. Try changing the output mode on your Virus (there's various different modes, 1in 3 out, various other configurations... I'm not all that clued up on them to be honest but I understand them to play a role in whether you get output or not).

If you don't have any luck, take a look in Logic and see if there is anything specific or unusual about the way you have your sound output configured. Also try closing Logic completely (as well as all other sound-producing applications) before you open itunes.

If all else fails, stop and sit and consider the problem. Where is the sound coming from, where is it going, which components are in that path and could be having an effect on it. Relax, allow yourself to become thoughtful, and let your natural intuition with computers mentally investigate the problem. Consider every part of the chain. I am sure you will find it. :>
