Thanks to Matt/Marc at Access USA, my machine is teh rescued.

Required a specially developed conduit thingee to be sent to my tech, whom then loaded it and BANG-ZOOM, she's back in phyne phettle.

Turns out the tech needn't have been involved at all...the fix was some sort of modified installer dealio.
