Default Converting and installing patch

Hi folks,

I've a virus b, superb piece of kit (wish I could afford a TI !)

I can load patches to it, even single ones but have a few questions I hope your experts can answer!

I have a particular note, ( yes a note played on another synth ) that I want to copy to my virus. This note is saved as a .wav file.

Am I right in presuming that you can only upload a midi file into the virus ? I've tried just the .wav but nothing happens.

I converted the .wav (which is about 10 seconds long) to a midi file and loaded that into the virus but the conversion software seemed to think the midi file was a tune and converted it into a long squeel !

Is there anyway I can transfer the .wav into the virus without altering it ?

or convert it to a midi without it getting destroyed ?

Cheers for your thoughts !

You are not able to load .wav into any Access Virus. The reason begin, is that the Virus is a synthesizer, not a sampler. If you had a sampler, you would be closer to being able to load a .wav "soundfile" into it. Midi is a language that enables electronic instruments and electronic music equipment to share system information, timing information, and transmission of notes to or from a sound module to a sequencer or keyboard.

Your .wav file will never become a midi file which the Virus will understand. This is a limitation of the technology. Perhaps you want to use the Virus filters and modulation to make that sound from the other synth more "awesomer"... unfortunately that won't work here.

You can play you other synth into the inputs on your virus to take advantage of the filters, and filter modulations. Try it out!

Thanks mon, I knew it wouldn't be that easy.

So my next question is, IS there a way of duplicating the .wav sound into a patch that sounds the same from the virus ? Some sort of conversion software (using the .wav's wafve form perhaps) ?

No, sadly not. Making a patch that sounds as close as possible on the virus isn't something that you can do automatically. It'll require you to learn about synthesis and spend a lot of time and a fair bit of trial and error. If you're desperate to get one particular sound, it might be worth posting a link to the .wav sound and asking the forum if they can advise on how best to recreate it. Someone might know of an existing patch which is already close in sound, that you could tweak, or at least tell you which waveforms/type of filters/ADSR envelope to use.

If you replicate the settings from your other synth, on your Virus, you will get a close aproxiamation of the sound. However, it will be different due to different tolerances and character to each of the components in either synth.

What is it you are hoping to achieve, exactly? Do you want the Virus to use this wav file as a sound source, so that you can process it with the Virus filters and such ? If so, the method described above IS what you're looking for. Plug your other synth into the Virus input, or plug a cable from your audio interface to the virus input and make the wav file play out the audio interface.
If you're trying to do something else completely and we are on the wrong track, then let us know :>

I am trying to re-create the 'Vox Humana' sound of the Polymoog on my Virus.

I thought that if I used a tone from a genuine Polymoog I would get a very close copy, then use the Virus to tweak it from there! Thus saving lots of time trying to re-create it by hand.

I've not seen a proper VH patch for the virus b, does anyone know if there is one or close ?
