Basically....for the average person starting to experiment with electronic music, going out and buying an expensive analogue synth or state of the art VA is just not an option. It is much cheaper for them to buy 3 or 4 softsynths, that take up no space, and can be run from within their computers. And typically, these people would not be able to tell the difference in sound quality between a softsynth, VA, or analogue synth.
Softsynths give a wider audience access to electronic music production, and this aint such a bad thing....
I for one dont like the sound of softsynths.....but i think with the advent of DSP based Virtual Instruments and FX, the computer based softsynths and outboard emulators are only going to get better....both in terms of sound quality and functionality.
